How to Decant Perfume Safely: A Step-by-Step Guide
Each press of a standard atomiser nozzle transfers roughly 0.1ml, so a 10ml travel bottle takes about a hundred presses through a plastic connector that costs less than a coffee.

Decanting perfume — transferring fragrance from its original bottle into a smaller container — is one of the most practical skills in a fragrance lover's toolkit. Whether you're preparing for travel, sharing a bottle with a friend, testing a new scent, or simply protecting a precious full bottle from daily wear, knowing how to decant safely makes a significant difference.
Why Do People Decant Perfume?
There are several good reasons to decant:
- Travel. Full-sized bottles are often too large for carry-on liquids allowances (the 100ml rule applies). A 5ml or 10ml travel atomiser holds enough for a week-long trip and fits easily in any bag.
- Protecting the original bottle. If you have a limited edition, a vintage, or a bottle you're particularly fond of, keeping it safely at home and carrying a decant reduces the risk of accidental damage.
- Sharing. When splitting a bottle with a friend — a sensible way to share the cost of a more expensive fragrance — decanting allows both parties to take their portion.
- Testing. Before committing to wearing a fragrance all day, a small decant lets you test it in real conditions without using the main bottle repeatedly.
- Organisation. Some collectors keep large bottle collections in storage and maintain smaller decants of daily drivers for easy access.
What You'll Need
The basic tools for safe decanting:
- Travel atomiser — a refillable, pocket-sized spray bottle. Quality matters: look for ones with a fine-mist spray mechanism and a secure cap. Common sizes are 5ml, 8ml, and 10ml.
- Perfume transfer tool (funnel adapter) — a small plastic tube that fits over the spray nozzle of most standard perfume bottles, allowing you to press down and transfer liquid directly into your atomiser. These cost very little and make mess-free decanting simple.
- Small funnel — for bottles where the sprayer can be fully removed, a tiny funnel allows careful pouring.
- Labels or a marker pen — to identify your decants. Small unlabelled bottles become confusing very quickly.
- Paper towels or a clean cloth — for any spillage.
Step-by-Step: Decanting Using a Transfer Tool
This method works for most standard spray-top perfume bottles and is the simplest approach:
- Remove the cap from your perfume bottle and from the transfer tool.
- Slide the transfer tool's connector onto the fragrance bottle's spray nozzle. It should sit securely over the nozzle.
- Insert the other end of the transfer tube into the opening of your travel atomiser.
- Press down on the perfume bottle nozzle — the fragrance will transfer directly into the atomiser via the tube. Each press typically transfers approximately 0.1ml, so for a 10ml atomiser, you'll need around 100 presses.
- When the atomiser is full, remove the transfer tool. Wipe any excess from both bottles.
- Label the atomiser immediately — include the fragrance name and date of decanting.
Step-by-Step: Decanting by Removing the Sprayer
For bottles with removable spray mechanisms:
- Remove the spray mechanism — on most crimp-top bottles this requires a small tool or careful prying. On some, the sprayer pulls straight off.
- Use a small clean funnel to pour the fragrance carefully into your atomiser or storage vial. Work slowly to avoid spillage and over-filling.
- Replace the sprayer immediately after decanting to minimise air exposure.
- Cap and label your decant.
Note: this method introduces more air into the original bottle, which accelerates oxidation. Use it only when necessary.
Avoiding Contamination
To keep your fragrances clean and uncontaminated:
- Never share atomisers between fragrances without thoroughly cleaning them first. Residual scent will mix and distort the new fragrance.
- Use clean, dry tools only. Moisture in an atomiser or funnel will dilute and potentially damage the fragrance.
- Work over a clean surface in case of spills.
- Avoid touching the spray nozzle or interior of the atomiser with your fingers — skin oils and bacteria can introduce unwanted elements.
Storing Your Decants
Decants in small atomisers have less headspace protection than sealed full bottles. Minimise air exposure by keeping them tightly capped, and store away from light and heat — the same principles that apply to full bottles.

Travel-Ready Fragrance Made Simple
Once you're comfortable decanting, the logistics of travelling with fragrance become simple. A small pouch of travel atomisers gives you variety — a different scent for different days — without any liquid restriction worries and without risking your full bottles.
