Description

Pear tree is one of the most valuable materials in the production of high-end furniture and wind instruments. Pear wood is harvested from pear trees, one of the many tree species in the genus Pyrus, which are typically cultivated for their edible pome fruit. This slow-growing tree can take decades to grow before the wood can be harvested, making it a relatively expensive type of wood. Sensual pear wood has a particularly hard composition that requires the sharpest tools for woodworking. On the other hand, this same property of pear tree makes it possible to sculpt the smallest details of the most delicate shapes, without splitting or breaking. The wood is quite light and golden, but the colors can easily change to reddish pink with burgundy undertones. There are often many different shades in a single piece of pear wood, fused imperceptibly into a dewy, fine-grained, light-colored texture. The pear tree is commonly used to make various flute-type instruments, because it gives a nice soft sound to the music. The pear tree was one of the pillars of the ancient Greek orchard, sacred to Hera and Aphrodite, although it rarely appears in ancient myths. Due to its longevity, the pear tree was a symbol of immortality for the ancient Chinese. In the Chinese language, fen li means both “sharing of the pear” and “separation”. For this reason, Chinese believe, lovers and friends should never share the same pear, as this will lead to separation. In Serbia, where I come from, pears are the favorite fruit. In fact, there are more pear trees in Serbia than there are people, and we have found a good use for each of them. One of the national drinks here is a type of luxurious brandy, a strong alcoholic drink known as viljamovka (made from Williams pears), which is distinguished by a pear that is ripe and grown inside the bottle. According to the ancient prophecy, one day there will be so few Serbs left that they will all be able to fit under one pear tree. Many of us would agree that it is heartwarming to know that we will still be able to enjoy a good pear brandy, even in the last days. : ) Like other fruit woods, pear wood has a slightly sweet and dense smell. When burnt, this wood gives off a tangy smoky aroma that is often described as the scent of blossoming pears. This wood is often burnt for cooking and smoking, to add a pleasant and easy flavor and to sweeten the meat. Pear woods produce a little less heat than other types of hardwoods, but create a wonderful ambiance and give off a fruity, honeyed scent when burned. Pear tree is one of the rarest perfume notes, generally used to offer a concept of earthy, sensual and somewhat bohemian olfactory experience in which the sweetness of the fruity notes mingle with the dryness of the wood. The pear tree note serves as a fragrant interpretation of the golden dew of pear wood, its delicate texture and its typically sweet, almost floral scent.
