Tomato Leaf Fragrances

Tomato leaf is the green, aromatic foliage of the tomato plant (Solanum lycopersicum), a member of the nightshade family cultivated worldwide. Because the leaves and stems hold little oil, the material is captured chiefly by solvent extraction to yield an absolute, often supported by synthetic green molecules that mirror the snapped-stem smell of the living plant.

Its scent is vividly green and verdant: sharp, sappy, and slightly bitter, with a cool dampness and a faint earthy-tomato tang reminiscent of brushing past the vine in a summer garden. There is a metallic, almost watery freshness to it, and over time it settles into a softer, leafy-herbal warmth.

In perfumery, tomato leaf belongs to the green and aromatic families and most often appears as a top or heart note, prized for an unexpected, naturalistic lift. It pairs beautifully with basil, galbanum, and other green notes, with crisp citruses, and with airy florals, while woods and vetiver ground its raw vitality below.
