Born of Royal Vision
Amouage is one of the most extraordinary fragrance houses in the world — not just because of its fragrances, which are among the finest being made anywhere, but because of the story behind its founding. The house was established in 1983 by HH Sayyid Hamad bin Hamoud Al Bu Said, a member of the Omani royal family and the then-Minister of Heritage, with a singular mission: to create a fragrance that would serve as a gift worthy of a sultan, and in doing so, revive the great tradition of Arabian perfumery for the modern world.
The Gift of Kings
The first Amouage fragrance, simply called Amouage (now known as Gold Woman and Gold Man), was created with Parisian perfumer Guy Robert and launched at a price that made it, at the time, the most expensive perfume in the world. The formulas used extraordinary quantities of frankincense — sourced from Oman's Dhofar region, one of the finest frankincense-producing areas on earth — alongside pure rose, myrrh, and rare animal musks. The bottles were designed in Bohemian crystal and silver. Nothing was compromised.
A Fragrant Heritage
Oman has one of the world's oldest and most sophisticated perfume cultures. Frankincense has been traded from the Arabian Peninsula for over 5,000 years. The traditional Omani practice of burning bakhoor — fragrant wood chips — and wearing attar oils represents a depth of olfactory culture that predates the European fine fragrance tradition by millennia.
