Collection: Borneol Fragrances

Borneol brings a rush of cool mountain air to a composition. A crystalline terpene alcohol found naturally in camphor trees, rosemary, lavender and many Asian medicinal herbs, it has been treasured for centuries in incense traditions across China, India and the Middle East. The scent is camphoraceous and icy on opening — clean, piney and slightly medicinal, with a peppery herbal edge — before drying down to a smoother, woody-balsamic calm. Its character is bracing, meditative and austere rather than sweet. Borneol pairs beautifully with incense, pine, eucalyptus, lavender and dry woods, sharpening fresh aromatic fragrances and lending a cool, almost spiritual clarity to ambery oriental blends.

About Borneol Fragrances

Borneol is a naturally occurring bicyclic terpene alcohol found in a range of aromatic plants including camphor trees (Dryobalanops aromatica) native to Borneo, Sumatra, and other parts of Southeast Asia, as well as in rosemary, sage, and certain conifers. It has been used for thousands of years in traditional Asian medicine, religious rituals, and ancient trade routes, with records of its use stretching back to antiquity in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine. Its name is derived from Borneo, one of its primary historical sources.

As a fragrance ingredient, borneol has a sharp, camphor-like, cooling character with a slightly medicinal edge and a subtle woody-minty quality. It belongs to the aromatic and woody fragrance families, and its piercing freshness makes it a distinctive and purposeful ingredient in perfumery. It pairs well with other camphoraceous and medicinal notes like eucalyptus and lavender, as well as with woody bases, resins, and incense accords. Its ancient, slightly austere quality lends gravitas and depth to compositions that explore the intersection of nature and heritage.

Borneol is cherished by perfumers drawn to historically resonant, botanically significant ingredients with a cool, cerebral character. At Fragrenza, we appreciate ingredients like borneol that carry centuries of history within their molecules, and we incorporate this fascinating note into our expertly crafted fragrance dupes.
