Collection: Kanuka Fragrances

In perfumery, kanuka is a breath of the New Zealand bush: an aromatic note from a native tree of the myrtle family, cousin to both manuka and tea tree. Its essence opens fresh and invigorating, with clean, camphor-tinged facets of eucalyptus-like greenery, then softens into a gentler, sweeter herbaceous warmth with light woody and honeyed undertones — noticeably milder than tea tree's medicinal sharpness. The character is bracing, outdoorsy and pure, like crushed leaves on a coastal trail. Kanuka works beautifully in aromatic, green and woody compositions, pairing with citrus, pine, herbs and pale woods to lend fragrances a crisp, restorative, freshly-foraged quality.

About Kanuka Fragrances

Kanuka (Kunzea ericoides) is a native New Zealand tree closely related to manuka, though distinct in character and use. It forms a critical part of New Zealand's ecological story — one of the first trees to recolonise disturbed land after fire or clearance, kanuka plays a vital role in forest regeneration and soil recovery. Maori have long used kanuka in traditional medicine, and its essential oil, steam-distilled from the leaves and small branches, has gained growing recognition for its therapeutic properties and captivating aromatic character.

The scent of kanuka oil is fresh, clean, and invigorating — a bright tea-tree freshness with a distinctive honeyed sweetness that distinguishes it from its medicinal cousin. Where tea tree can feel sharp and clinical, kanuka is gentler and more rounded, its freshness tempered by a warm, slightly spicy-herbal depth and a soft honeyed quality that recalls the New Zealand bush after summer rain. There is an almost coastal clarity to it — bracing and clean, yet warm and natural. It blends beautifully with lavender, cedarwood, manuka honey, eucalyptus, and green tea notes.

Kanuka is particularly valued in natural and wellness-inspired fragrances, where its clean, botanical honesty and connection to the pristine New Zealand landscape are genuine selling points. It suits fresh-herbal, clean-green, and aromatherapeutic fragrance compositions. At Fragrenza, our kanuka collection channels the revitalising spirit of the New Zealand bush through expertly formulated dupe fragrances — clean, fresh luxury without the luxury price tag.
