About Ledum Fragrances

Ledum, commonly known as Labrador tea (Rhododendron groenlandicum, formerly Ledum groenlandicum), is a low-growing shrub native to the cold bogs, tundra, and boreal forests of Northern Canada, Alaska, and Greenland. Indigenous peoples of these regions have long used its aromatic leaves for traditional medicinal teas and remedies. In perfumery, ledum essential oil — derived from the steam distillation of the plant's leaves and branches — is an unusual and distinctly characterful material, relatively rare in mainstream fragrance but treasured by niche perfumers for its stark, northern wilderness quality.

The olfactory profile of ledum is striking and unconventional: it opens with a sharp, camphorous, slightly medicinal clarity reminiscent of eucalyptus and cold air, then gradually reveals a woody-green body with earthy, resinous undertones and a faint, bitter herbaceousness. There is something bracing and austere about ledum — it evokes frozen landscapes, pine-covered hillsides, and the clean sharpness of Arctic wind. In fragrance compositions, it is valued for adding rugged, naturalistic depth to woody and aromatic structures, and for giving a distinctive, unexpected edge to chypre or fougère-style compositions. It is a note for those who appreciate the unconventional.

At Fragrenza, our ledum collection presents fragrance dupes that explore the bold, wild character of this rare northern botanical — crafted to bring niche-quality experiences to everyone at an accessible price.
