Mastic (Lentisque) Fragrances

Mastic (Lentisque) Fragrances

Mastic, also called lentisque, is a fragrant resin tapped from the mastic tree (Pistacia lentiscus), an evergreen shrub of the Mediterranean basin long associated with the Greek island of Chios. The resin is collected as pale, brittle "tears" that ooze from incisions in the bark, then steam-distilled or solvent-extracted to yield the aromatic material used in perfumery.

Its scent is dry, resinous, and green, with a pine-like, coniferous brightness and a soft balsamic warmth beneath. There are subtle peppery, leathery, and faintly sweet incense facets, lending a clean, slightly terpenic freshness that settles into a smooth, woody-resinous depth on skin.

In composition, mastic belongs to the woody, resinous, and incense families and works as a heart-to-base material, adding texture and a natural, balsamic lift. It pairs readily with pine and other conifers, labdanum, frankincense, citruses, and dry woods, bridging fresh top notes and warmer foundations.

About Mastic (Lentisque) Fragrances

Mastic — known in Greek as mastiha and derived from the resin of the Pistacia lentiscus tree grown almost exclusively on the island of Chios, Greece — is one of the Mediterranean world's most ancient and distinctive aromatic substances. For thousands of years it has been chewed as a breath freshener, used in cooking, medicine, and varnish-making, and prized for its extraordinary scent: a fresh, complex resin that combines bright pine-like clarity with citrus zest, a subtle herbal sweetness, and an earthy warmth that anchors it in the landscape of the Mediterranean garrigue.

In perfumery, mastic is beloved for its unusual freshness within the resin category — unlike labdanum or benzoin, which tend toward warm sweetness, mastic carries a crisp, almost piney brightness that makes it feel simultaneously ancient and vital. It adds a Mediterranean dimension to compositions: the heat-shimmering scrubland of a Greek island, the sharp saltiness of the Aegean coast, the resinous perfume of a pine grove at midday. It blends beautifully with woody notes, citrus, oakmoss, and cool florals, contributing to fragrances with genuine sense of place.

Fragrances featuring mastic appeal to those who love resins with freshness rather than heaviness — compositions with a luminous, sun-bleached Mediterranean character that feels both ancient and completely modern. At Fragrenza, our mastic collection brings the singular beauty of this Chian resin to you through premium-quality dupes at accessible prices, celebrating one of perfumery's most underappreciated treasures.
