Collection: Valerian Fragrances

The perfume note of valerian unfolds with a strange, compelling earthiness drawn from the root of a plant better known for inducing sleep. Up close the raw material is pungent — damp soil, aged wood and a musky, almost animalic funk — yet diluted in a composition it softens into a warm, herbal-balsamic depth with mossy, faintly leathery shadows. The plant's flowers, by contrast, are sweet and heliotrope-like, and perfumers sometimes evoke that gentler side instead.

Valerian pairs well with oakmoss, patchouli, hay, dark resins and other rooty materials, anchoring herbal and chypre-style structures. The mood it creates is nocturnal and hypnotic: an apothecary at dusk, somewhere between remedy and reverie.
