Blood Orange Fragrances

Blood orange is a richly pigmented variety of the sweet orange (Citrus sinensis), its deep crimson flesh developing when the fruit ripens in cool nights, as in the groves of Sicily and the wider Mediterranean. As with other citrus, its fragrant oil is cold-pressed, or expressed, from the rind of the fresh fruit.

Its scent is a juicy, sweet citrus, rounder and deeper than ordinary orange, with a tart, slightly bitter edge and a warm, almost jammy facet. Hints of red berries and a soft floral nuance lend it a distinctive blush, though, like all citrus oils, it is fleeting and sparkling on the skin.

In perfumery, blood orange is a bright top note, central to the citrus and fresh families and a lively way to open a fragrance. It pairs naturally with bergamot, neroli, and other citruses, and sits happily against spices, florals, and warm woods below.

About Blood Orange Fragrances

Blood orange is a strikingly beautiful citrus fruit, a natural mutation of the sweet orange believed to have originated in Sicily and the Mediterranean basin as early as the 9th century. Its distinctive ruby-red flesh is the result of anthocyanin pigments that develop in cool nighttime temperatures during the growing season. The fruit's aroma is more complex and multifaceted than standard orange — richer, deeper, and threaded with dark berry notes reminiscent of raspberry and pomegranate alongside the classic bright citrus character.

In perfumery, blood orange is a sophisticated and vibrant top note with a deep, ruby-red olfactory identity. It belongs to the citrus and fruity fragrance families, but its additional berry-like complexity gives it a richness that sets it apart from ordinary orange. It pairs exceptionally well with dark berry notes, rose, amber, vetiver, patchouli, and warm spices such as cardamom and black pepper, as well as with chypre and oriental bases where it adds an irresistible luminous vitality. It is a prized opener in fine fragrances for its ability to simultaneously feel fresh and complex.

Blood orange has become one of perfumery's most beloved citrus ingredients for its depth, vibrancy, and unique dark-fruity character. At Fragrenza, this captivating note appears across several of our collections, letting you explore its rich, multifaceted beauty through our high-quality fragrance dupes at outstanding value.
