May Rose Fragrances

May Rose Fragrances

May Rose is the spring harvest of the cabbage rose (Rosa centifolia), a many-petalled flower long cultivated around Grasse in the south of France. Picked at dawn in early summer, the fragile blooms are most often solvent-extracted into a concrete and then an absolute, capturing a fidelity that distillation can struggle to match.

Its scent is soft, honeyed, and luminous: a fresh, dewy rose with green, leafy facets and a gentle spiced warmth, rounder and more transparent than the deeper, jammier rose of other varieties. Over time it settles into a tender, slightly waxy petal sweetness.

In perfumery, May Rose is a treasured heart note and a cornerstone of the floral family, lending natural radiance and elegance. It harmonises with other rose materials, jasmine, and violet, and sits beautifully above patchouli, sandalwood, and musks.

About May Rose Fragrances

May rose, known botanically as Rosa centifolia or the "hundred-petalled rose," is one of perfumery's most precious and storied raw materials. Cultivated primarily in Grasse in Provence and in the Dades Valley of Morocco, it blooms only in May — a brief, glorious window during which the entire harvest must be gathered by hand at dawn, before the heat of the day diminishes the fragile petals' aromatic potential. The Rose de Mai absolute extracted from these petals is one of the most expensive natural ingredients in the world.

In fragrance, May rose is richer, deeper, and more honeyed than the more commonly used Bulgarian damask rose. Its scent profile carries a distinctive sweet, almost jammy quality alongside the classic rose character — notes of honey, beeswax, and warm dried fruit give it a complexity and depth that no synthetic rose accord has ever fully replicated. The absolute is extraordinarily tenacious, and a single drop can perfume a composition for hours. It is the rose of choice for the world's greatest perfumers when they wish to create something of uncompromising quality.

Fragrances built around May rose and Rose de Mai absolute tend to be some of the most luxurious and sought-after in perfumery. The deep, honeyed sweetness of Rosa centifolia lends itself to both opulent orientals and refined chypres, as well as standalone soliflore rose compositions of extraordinary beauty.
