Narcissus Fragrances

Narcissus is the intensely fragrant flower of the poet's daffodil (Narcissus poeticus), a spring-blooming bulb cultivated for perfumery in the mountains of France, around Grasse and the high plateaus of the Auvergne. The freshly picked blooms are solvent-extracted to yield a precious, deeply coloured absolute.

Its scent is rich and complex: a green, hay-like floral laced with honey and a dark, almost animalic depth. Indolic and faintly narcotic, it carries bitter leafy facets and a mossy, earthy warmth that can read as both intoxicating and slightly somber on the skin.

In perfumery, narcissus is a heart note belonging to the floral and chypre families, treasured but used sparingly owing to its cost and intensity. It adds depth and naturalness to floral bouquets, pairing beautifully with jasmine, hyacinth, and rose above, and oakmoss, woods, and labdanum below.

About Narcissus Fragrances

Narcissus fragrance is derived from species such as Narcissus poeticus and jonquil (Narcissus jonquilla), bulbous flowering plants native to the meadows and rocky hillsides of southern Europe and North Africa. The extraction of narcissus absolute is a painstaking process requiring solvent extraction of the delicate flowers, yielding a rich, semi-solid material in very small quantities. This rarity, combined with its extraordinary aromatic character, makes narcissus one of the most coveted ingredients in haute perfumery.

The scent of narcissus is intensely heady and green-floral, with a compelling complexity that mingles fresh greenness, honey, a subtle rubbery-medicinal quality, and a deep sweetness that borders on narcotic. There is something simultaneously natural and unsettling about narcissus — its beauty is laced with a wild, almost hypnotic edge that has captivated perfumers for generations. On skin, it evolves beautifully, revealing new facets of warmth and florality as it dries.

Narcissus is a signature ingredient in chypre and green floral compositions, lending them an unmistakable depth and naturalistic complexity. It blends magnificently with iris, oakmoss, violet, and woody notes. At Fragrenza, our Narcissus collection celebrates this rare and captivating floral through expertly crafted fragrance dupes that honour its intoxicating spirit while keeping luxury accessible.
