Frankincense, also known as Olibanum, Levonah, Luban, and Khunk, is an aromatic, frozen, resinous sap from a specific variety of trees in the genus Boswellia in the Burseraceae family (pictured below). Trees need an arid climate where moisture is provided by the morning mist. The few ideal environments in the world for this prized small tree are found in South Arabia (Oman and Yemen), India and North Africa (Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea and Kenya). Additionally, frankincense trees require a soil rich in limestone and grow mainly on rocky hills and cliffs, or in dry riverbeds below. Frankincense can be a bit peppery and pungent, especially when paired with myrrh or presented as a single note scent. I find that I enjoy it the most when combined with amber, wood, vanilla, or other resins that allow frankincense to show off its spicy side without feeling too dry or bitter. Halston's short-lived and little-known Woman's Amber offers incense as a focal point combined mostly with woods and amber. A prominent suede note adds depth to the base notes while Italian tangerine and red currant create a tangy hint of otherwise spicy sweetness. Perhaps the biggest surprise is the subtle inclusion of an airy, floral tuberose (neither syrupy nor powdery). The result is an unusual take on the ubiquitous amber that feels rounded, rich and unique. Sumptuous is the word that comes to my mind the most. Widely available online at surprisingly affordable prices (as it has been discontinued), Halston Woman Amber offers superb longevity and development. For lovers of Frankincesne and perfumes like YSL Nu or Hermes L'Ambre des Merveilles, Woman Amber would probably be an exciting find! And the bottle of Elsa Peretti is quite amazing.
