Sweet Grass Fragrances

Sweet Grass Fragrances

Sweet grass is an aromatic perennial grass (Hierochloe odorata) found across the cool meadows and wetlands of northern Eurasia and North America. Traditionally gathered and dried in braids, it owes much of its fragrance to coumarin, the sweet, hay-like molecule that develops as the cut blades cure.

Its scent is soft and golden: freshly mown hay and warm meadow grass wrapped in a gentle, vanilla-like sweetness, with green, almost herbal facets and a faint tobacco warmth. It reads clean and nostalgic, mellowing on skin into a cozy, sun-dried smoothness.

In perfumery, sweet grass lends a tender green-gourmand quality to fougere, aromatic, and oriental compositions, most often coloring the heart or supporting the base. It blends naturally with lavender, tonka bean, and oakmoss, and softens sharper herbs, hay accords, and woods.
