Sichuan Pepper Fragrances

Sichuan pepper is drawn from the berries of the prickly ash shrub (Zanthoxylum), and despite its name it is not a true peppercorn. It is the dried reddish-brown husk surrounding the tiny seed that carries the aroma, native to East Asia and most famously to the Sichuan province of China. The aromatic oil is typically obtained by steam distillation of these husks.

Its scent is bright, zesty, and lively: a citrusy, almost grapefruit-like sparkle threaded with rosy and woody facets, lifted by a warm, peppery tingle. It is less fiery than black pepper, instead offering a fizzing, faintly numbing buzz that feels effervescent and fresh.

In perfumery, Sichuan pepper sits among the spicy notes and works as a vibrant top-to-heart accent. It adds brightness and movement to woody, fougere, citrus, and oriental compositions, sparking the opening before settling into the heart. It pairs naturally with bergamot and other citruses, with rose and pink pepper, and with cedar and other warm woods.

About Sichuan Pepper Fragrances

Sichuan pepper, harvested from the prickly ash shrub (Zanthoxylum simulans and related species) native to the Sichuan province of China, is unlike any other spice in the world. Its berries produce a unique tingling, numbing sensation on the tongue known as in Chinese, paired with a bright, citrusy, and distinctly floral-spicy aroma. Long a cornerstone of Chinese cuisine, it has also found a celebrated place in modern niche perfumery.

As a fragrance note, Sichuan pepper is electric and vibrant — citrusy yet spicy, with a characteristic fizzing, almost effervescent quality that makes it feel alive on the skin. It adds a kinetic energy to compositions, often used in the top or heart notes to create an arresting, dynamic opening. It pairs exceptionally well with woods, ambers, resins, and cool aquatics, bringing a sophisticated, slightly exotic spice that is more nuanced than black pepper and more piquant than pink pepper.
