Indian Oud Fragrances

Indian Oud Fragrances

Indian oud is the prized, resinous heartwood of the agarwood tree (Aquilaria), grown across India and especially the forests of Assam. The fragrant resin forms only when the tree responds to a particular mould infection; the darkened wood is then steam- or hydro-distilled into a dense, precious oil long treasured in traditional attars.

Its scent is deep, animalic, and complex: warm woody resin laced with leather, smoke, and earthy, balsamic facets, sometimes touched by a barnyard pungency that mellows over time into a sweet, honeyed, almost medicinal warmth. On skin it is tenacious, evolving slowly and lingering for hours.

In perfumery, oud is a powerful base note and the heart of the woody and oriental families. A little goes a long way, adding richness, depth, and remarkable longevity. It pairs beautifully with rose, saffron, sandalwood, amber, and spices, anchoring opulent, long-lasting compositions.

About Indian Oud Fragrances

Indian oud — derived from agarwood produced primarily in the Assam region of northeast India, as well as parts of Bangladesh and neighbouring areas — represents one of the most prized and historically significant variants of this extraordinary natural material. Agarwood forms when Aquilaria trees become infected with a specific mould, producing a dark, intensely fragrant resin as a defence response. The Indian variety is widely regarded by connoisseurs and perfumers as among the finest in the world, offering a distinctive aromatic profile that sets it apart from Southeast Asian or Middle Eastern ouds.

The olfactory character of Indian oud is deep, complex, and profoundly animalic — more barnyard-rich and medicinal than the sweet, fruity ouds of Cambodia or the dry, smoky variants from the Middle East. There is a dark leather-like intensity, a smoky resinous warmth, and an animalic earthiness that is challenging in isolation but transforms into something extraordinary within a skilled fragrance composition. The depth and tenacity of Indian oud are unmatched, with a drydown that evolves for hours on skin, revealing new facets of complexity with each passing stage.

In perfumery, Indian oud is a cornerstone of luxury oriental, Arabian-inspired, and contemporary niche compositions. It pairs magnificently with rose, saffron, sandalwood, musk, amber, and precious resins. At Fragrenza, our Indian oud collections feature carefully crafted dupe interpretations of the most distinguished oud-centred fragrances available — bringing the depth and opulence of this rare, revered material within reach at a genuinely accessible price.
