Diptyque began not as a fragrance house but as a boutique at 34 Boulevard Saint-Germain in Paris, opened in 1961 by three friends — Christiane Gautrot, Desmond Knox-Leet, and Yves Coueslant — who sold an eclectic mix of fabrics, objects, and decorative curiosities. The store's distinctive oval logo, designed by Knox-Leet, was inspired by the ancient Greek concept of a diptych — two panels joined together, creating a single unified image.
Fragrance arrived in 1963 with L'Eau, a scented candle that grew out of the founders' desire to make their shop smell as beautiful as it looked. The first eau de toilette followed in 1968, and a house was born.
