Acqua di Sale and Arso wear eight hours flat at extrait concentration, the kind of unapologetic commitment most houses long abandoned.

Beyond the Big Names

The fragrance conversation online is dominated by the same handful of houses: Creed, Chanel, Tom Ford, Maison Margiela. These are great houses — no argument there. But the world of fragrance is far larger, stranger, and more interesting than any bestseller list suggests. Here are some houses that deserve far more attention than they typically receive.

Etro

The Italian luxury house Etro has been making fragrance since 1984, and their catalogue is rich with unusual, confident compositions that refuse to pander to trends. Shantung, their silky dry-silkwood scent, and Messe de Minuit — incense, beeswax, and cool stone — are both masterclasses in restraint. Etro fragrances are widely available and often underpriced relative to their quality.

Serge Lutens

Technically not obscure, but still wildly underappreciated by mainstream buyers. Lutens builds fragrances that are deeply literary, occasionally confrontational, and always interesting. Ambre Sultan is one of the great amber compositions; Feminite du Bois reshaped the woody fragrance category in the 1990s and has never been bettered.

Profumum Roma

This Italian house makes Extraits only — no Eau de Parfum, no Eau de Toilette, no compromises. Their concentration is extreme and their quality exceptional. Acqua di Sale (sea salt and skin) and Arso (smoked wood and leather) are both magnificent and perform for eight or more hours with ease.

Orto Parisi

Alessandro Gualtieri, the creative force behind Nasomatto, launched Orto Parisi as a study in biological, animalistic, raw fragrance. These are not comfortable scents — they are fascinating ones. Megamare, an oceanic fragrance with real depth, and Terroni, a study in sun-baked earth and dried herbs, are unlike anything in mainstream perfumery.

Nishane

The Turkish house Nishane makes bold, highly wearable extraits that punch far above their price point. Hacivat (a rich fig-oud-citrus) and Fan Your Flames (a dark rose-oud combination) are both exceptional. Nishane consistently over-delivers on quality relative to cost.
