Black Currant Fragrances

Black Currant Fragrances

Black currant is the small, dark berry of the blackcurrant shrub (Ribes nigrum), a deciduous bush native to temperate Europe and central and northern Asia. While the ripe fruit can be used, perfumery prizes above all an absolute extracted from the aromatic buds, often called cassis, alongside captive molecules built to capture the same effect.

Its scent is vivid and instantly recognisable: a tart, juicy berry sweetness wrapped around a sharp, green, leafy facet. Most distinctive is a pungent, sulphurous edge, sometimes described as catty or animalic, that gives the note its wild, slightly feral character before it settles into a softer, fruity warmth.

In composition, black currant belongs to the fruity family and most often works as a top or heart note, lending sparkle, freshness, and a tangy lift. A little goes a long way. It pairs beautifully with rose and other florals, with crisp green and citrus materials, and with woods and patchouli beneath.

About Black Currant Fragrances

Black Currant — known botanically as Ribes nigrum — is a small, intensely dark berry native to northern Europe and Asia, prized in perfumery for a character that is simultaneously vibrant and controversial. The fragrance of black currant comes primarily from two sources: the ripe fruit itself, which delivers a deep, jammy, and tangy sweetness; and the leaves and buds, which yield a sharper, more green and almost ammoniac note often described as catty or foxy. This distinctive dual personality is what makes the note so compelling to perfumers.

In a finished fragrance, the black currant accord reads as richly fruity with a tart edge — like biting into a ripe berry that has been left in the sun, with an unexpected wild, slightly animal undercurrent that keeps it from being merely sweet. Perfumers use black currant to add a vivid, juicy burst to fruity florals, to inject tartness into berry-based compositions, or to lend a provocative, slightly feral quality to more complex oriental or chypre structures. The interplay between its sweet fruitiness and its more pungent facets gives it a tension that linear sweet notes cannot replicate.

Black currant has become increasingly prominent in modern perfumery, lending its signature tartness to some of the most vibrant and talked-about launches of recent years. At Fragrenza, our inspired-by fragrances bring you the juicy, tangy intensity of luxury black currant compositions — all the depth and character, with none of the designer markup.
