Thuja Fragrances

Thuja Fragrances

Thuja is the aromatic foliage of the eastern white cedar (Thuja occidentalis), an evergreen conifer of the cypress family native to northeastern North America, also known as arborvitae. Its essential oil, often called cedar leaf oil, is steam-distilled from the flattened, scale-like leaves and young twigs rather than the wood.

The scent is crisp, fresh, and decidedly coniferous, with a sharp camphoraceous bite reminiscent of crushed evergreen needles. Green and herbaceous, it carries cool eucalyptus-like and faintly medicinal facets over a dry, resinous woodiness, lending a brisk, almost piney coolness that softens as it settles.

In perfumery, thuja belongs to the woody and aromatic-fougere families and usually works as a top to heart note, prized for its bracing freshness in masculine and forest-inspired compositions. It pairs naturally with pine, juniper, and other conifers, and sits well alongside lavender, citrus, and the drier cedarwoods and vetiver beneath.
