Yves Saint Laurent founded his fashion house in Paris in 1961 after leaving his position at Christian Dior, and in doing so launched one of the most consequential careers in the history of fashion. Saint Laurent was a radical: he put women in tuxedos, brought ready-to-wear to couture, and drew inspiration from the streets, from art, and from the cultures of Africa and Morocco. His house became a symbol of intelligent, liberated modernity — fashion that empowered as much as it adorned.

The house launched its first fragrance, Y, in 1964 — a refined chypre that immediately established Yves Saint Laurent Beaute as a serious player in the world of perfumery. The fragrance division grew steadily, but it was Opium in 1977 that created a genuine sensation. Rich, incense-laden, and boldly oriental, Opium was as provocative in name as in spirit, and its controversial launch party aboard a ship in New York Harbor generated headlines worldwide. It became one of the most successful and imitated fragrances in history.

Paris, launched in 1983, is a luminous rose soliflore that has become a classic of feminine elegance. Mon Paris, Libre, and Black Opium — a contemporary gourmand coffee reinterpretation — have introduced YSL's fragrance legacy to new generations of wearers.
