Patchouli is the leaf of a bushy tropical herb (Pogostemon cablin) in the mint family, native to the islands of Southeast Asia. Its dried and fermented leaves are steam-distilled to yield a thick, dark oil that, unusually, improves and mellows with age.

The scent is deep and earthy: damp soil and dark wood wrapped in a sweet, balsamic warmth, with camphoraceous, herbal, and faintly winey, chocolate-like facets. Bold and tenacious, it can read musty and rugged when raw, smoother and almost gourmand once refined and aged.
